We live in is a visually dominant world. \u201cSeeing is believing,\u201d we say. But the worlds out of which sacred texts such as the Hebrew Scriptures, the Christian Bible, and the Quran emerged were worlds of sound\u2014mysterious and enchanted. We will explore these worlds, becoming familiar with the deeply spiritual nature of sound, and the ways in which sound is ephemeral, living, and dynamic. Using Marshall McLuhan\u2019s four laws of media as our guide, Dr. Todd Stockdale will focus on the spiritual implications of the move from hearing-dominant to visual-dominant cultures.
