Toni’s Kitchen

For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.

Matthew 25:35

Toni’s Kitchen is a food ministry at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Montclair, New Jersey.  There, as many as 100 guests are offered warm hospitality and a hot, nutritious meal without screening for income or need, every Thursday, Friday, Saturday (11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m) and Sunday (5:00-6:00 p.m)  as well as on Christmas Day.  (Similar programs take place on other days of the week and on Thanksgiving at The Montclair Citadel of the Salvation Army).

Toni’s Kitchen, which is named after its first cook, Antoinette “Toni” Green, has been in continuous operation as a non-profit, charitable entity under St Luke’s Church since its founding in 1982.  Except for our cooks, who are paid a modest stipend, the kitchen is staffed by volunteers of all faiths from throughout the community.  Much of the food is donated by local organizations, business establishments and individuals, and serving is done by volunteers.

Mission Statement
“To Serve Our Guests”   At Toni’s Kitchen every effort is made to assure an atmosphere of warmth and respect for all persons who find themselves in need.  Toni’s Kitchen serves those in our community who are hungry without regards to circumstances.  Our guests are welcomed in the warm embrace of hospitality.

Support Our Mission
Toni’s Kitchen is possible because of daily acts of generosity.  We are self-supporting, relying on contributions from individuals and organizations in our community.  Even though some of the food that is served is donated, funds are needed for the purchase of required additional foodstuffs and supplies as well as for basic operational expenses.  The need becomes particularly critical whenever replacement of major appliances becomes necessary.  Your contribution is tax deductible.

Volunteer Support
Whether your schedule permits a weekly or monthly contribution of time, your efforts will be appreciated and you will find the experience more personally rewarding than you ever imagined. With others, you’ll greet guests and assist with setup, food preparation, serving and cleanup. We always need volunteers also to pack backpacks full of food for educational programs, pickup food doantions, tend our community garden, fundraise, write grants, plan special events, or help in the office. You can contact Toni’s Kitchen at 973-733-6220 x 303.

Volunteer slots in the kitchen are in 2-hour shifts, but as projects vary, the time commitment also varies.
