Social Justice Sunday – Immigration – Sunday, November 13

horizontal-logoHave you ever wondered what happens to the thousands of undocumented immigrants before they are scheduled for deportation or seeking political/human rights asylum?

As the name of this not-for-profit organization suggests, the mission of First Friends is to be friends to immigration detainees.  The volunteers from First Friends provide comfort and support to the detainees who have no outside contact in our area, and when an individual is fortunate enough to gain asylum status or is released on bond, First Friends is there to help them to transition into our society.

There will be a group of people from First Friends, including Sr. Regina Holtz, who will hold a presentation / discussion following at 11:30 on Sunday November 13.  She will discuss the treatment of detainees as they await either deportation or public hearing.  There are approximately 34,000 detainees in over 70 centers in the United State, which are managed by privatized corporations.  In New Jersey, there are four centers, housing up to 2,500 detainees.

Come and meet a volunteer and a former detainee.  And, please join in the conversation and exploration of how God might be calling us as a faith community to participate in this ministry.
